Why We Love Marketing! (Pierce College Guest Lecture part 1)

Jan 12, 2023

We are always honored when we get the opportunity to share our love and knowledge of marketing with fellow marketing nerds! We visited a communications class at Pierce College here in the Tacoma, WA area back in November to talk about why we love marketing, some real-world case studies from our work, and some pro-tips for anyone looking to get a job in the field.

This first part of our talk is focused on why we love marketing; make sure to come back for parts 2 and 3! Watch the video below or read on for the top reasons why we love marketing, and you might want to consider a career in the marketing field!

Reason #1: GROWTH

Working in this field, we’re always at the forefront of growing things. When a customer hires us to work with them as their marketing team, it’s because they’re looking to grow their own customer base, or their market share, or the amount of traffic their website receives–they’re trying to grow SOMETHING. Effective marketing strategies are a way to achieve that growth.

In fact, our team’s philosophy is that if we are doing our job right, we are constantly celebrating growth. One recent example is a newer customer of ours, a mobile auto detailing service, who we worked with to run a Google Ad campaign. Within the first 24 hours of launching the campaign we were able to congratulate this customer on getting their first lead! That celebration of growth is one of the most rewarding aspects of our work in marketing.

Reason #2: INNOVATION

If you’re the type of person who loves change or a challenge, marketing might be a great field for you! This is a field that is constantly innovating and thrives on new ideas and approaches to old problems.

One great example of this is our work with nonprofit charity World Vision, a 50-plus-year-old organization that has used various approaches to building its donor base over the decades. Direct mail and TV and radio broadcasts were the main channels World Vision had used up until the late 1990s, but of course if you fast forward to now, digital channels are crucial to any marketing strategy. We’ll go over in a little more detail the innovative work we did with World Vision in part 2 when we cover some real-world case studies, so stay tuned!

Reason #3: SCIENCE

Marketing is math! While we can never 100% guarantee any one outcome, there is so much information and data that we can collect to help us analyze and fine-tune marketing strategies to gain a competitive advantage. Anyone can publish a Facebook post or a Google Ad, but can you post the RIGHT content, and get it in front of the right audience, to actually move the needle for a business?

By looking at the science and data behind consumer behavior, we can actually predict fairly accurately how certain strategies will be received. In fact, we have a formula for that! It looks like this:

C = 4m + 3v + 2(i-f) – 2a

C = conversion

m = motivation

v = value proposition

i = incentive

f = friction

a = anxiety

All of these factors go into determining how we prioritize our marketing activities. We break these terms down further in the above video, and we may go more in-depth into the formula in a future post!

Those are just three of the big reasons why our team loves marketing so much, though our individual team members each have their own reasons, and we’re sure you have your own unique reasons as well!
